The Clerk's Department is responsible for the coordination and management of the Municipal Elections. In accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, every four years the City Clerk as Returning Officer, conducts elections for the offices of: Mayor, Councillors, and trustees on the following School Boards: English Language Public, French Language Public, English Language Separate, and French Language Separate.

Eligibility to Vote

A person is entitled to be an elector at an election held in Timmins if, on voting day, he or she, resides in Timmins or is the owner or tenant of land in Timmins or the spouse or same-sex partner of such owner or tenant;

  • is a Canadian citizen;
  • is at least 18 years old; and
  • is not prohibited from voting under this or any other Act.

A person is NOT qualified to vote for a member of a school board for an area unless the person resides in the area on voting day. This does not apply, however, to an owner of residential property in the area, or to the spouse or same-sex partner of that person.  

Voting by Proxy

A person entitled to be an elector in the City of Timmins elections and is on the Voters' List or who has been added to the Voters' List may vote by proxy.

A Proxy Form can be picked up at the Clerk's Office, City Hall, 220 Algonquin Blvd. E or mailed upon request to the elector.

The elector voting by proxy may appoint any other person that is entitled to be an elector in the City of Timmins elections to vote on their behalf. Once the elector has appointed someone that person will bring the proxy form to the Clerk's Office and if the Clerk is satisfied that the person is qualified to act as a proxy voter, give a certificate in the prescribed form.

The Certificate is presented by the person at the polling location of the elector and he/she will receive the appropriate ballots for the elector. A person shall not appoint more than one proxy, act as a voting proxy for more than one other person, unless the proxy and the other person are spouses, same-sex partners or siblings of each other, parents and child or grandparent and grandchild.
