Effective today, March 23, 2009, the City of Timmins will increase its reach of residents interested in viewing council meetings by introducing live broadcasts of municipal council meetings over the Internet, using webcast technology. Over the years, live broadcasts of council meetings were restricted to homeowners that subscribed to cable television service and these broadcasts were not available to homeowners who preferred satellite TV. With webcast technology, people without access to the local cable network will be able to view live council meetings by visiting www.timmins.ca and clicking on the link to the City's live webcast. The link is available from the City's homepage. A calendar of council meeting dates and times as well as the current meeting agenda is also posted on the City's website. "The webcast technology will allow us to reach a greater number of residents and provide a valued source of municipal information for the many locals traveling on business, the many snowbirds and for the many students attending post secondary school away from home. Anyone with Internet access will be one click away from live broadcasts of council meetings. This new communication tool should prove to be a valuable resource for the many residents with an interest in civic affairs or for those considering a move to our city", added Mayor Laughren. "A webcast uses streaming media technology to take single content source and distribute it to many simultaneous viewers. We have tested this technology and we are happy to be launching this service. Providing residents with a new source for real time information allows us to greatly improve on customer service while enhancing the value of our web site" added David Laneville, the City's Director of IT.
